The Finley Forever Foundation, founded in 2021 by Lacey Bracken in memory of her daughter Finley, supports young oncology patients and families in Chicago, providing Stem Cell Courage Kits and hosting fundraising events like Finley Fest and Lights & Ladders Brigade. This was a capstone project for the Human-Computer Interaction Master's Program at DePaul University.

Background

  • Barebones website appearance and functionality

  • Limited merchandise purchasing process

  • Lackluster donation process

  • Limited time, budget, resources, and budget

Problem

  • Enhance website functionality and appearance: Revamp design, reorganize content, update visuals, and optimize for mobile devices to provide a seamless browsing experience.

  • Increase engagement and impact: Add clear calls-to-action, such as donation buttons and volunteer recruitment forms.

  • Streamline merchandise and donation process: Simplify the user experience to make purchasing and donating easier, saving our Lacey’s time and effort.

  • Create time and cost-effective solutions: Stay within the budget and alleviate the Lacey’s  time burden through task simplification, automation, and reduced manual effort.

  • Scale for future growth: Provide guidelines, resources, and templates, to enable ongoing website updates and expansion.

Goals To Reimagine this Experience

Tree Test:

We conducted a tree test with participants from our user research to evaluate the findability and heirarchy of our proposed sitemap.

Usability Test: Testing The Designs

We tested if participants could find information on donations, volunteering, impact stories, events, CTAs, merchandise, and subscribing to the newsletter. We also asked for feedback after each task.

Results:

1. Most challenging tasks: Contributing to Courage Kits, and checking eligibility

2. Easiest task: Making a monetary donation

3. Favorite things about the website: Impact Stories page and the photos of children helped

4. Least favorite thing about the website: Nothing (except someone mentioned the colors)

5. Would you support or donate to this organization?: Yes

6. Other suggestions for the website: Make a donation landing page with all donation options (one time, monthly, contribute to Courage Kits)
